A Place to Park It

Nothing says rest like a place to sit after a long hike. Minimalists may prefer a small pad on the ground, but when it’s raining and a little muddy, I like my seat out of the water. As much camping as we do at state parks, there’s usually a concrete picnic table and benches close by, but a folding chair of some sort is still needed for the campfire area. A folding captain’s chair works for us in camp, but the backpacker needs a lightweight, sturdy portable folding chair.

And we found one, this past Christmas, and it became a gift for three of us. We’re all pretty tall, and like our knees to not be under our chins when we’re sitting on a chair. A stool that can support over 200 pounds is also a requirement - as is light weight and easy setup. Here you have it, the CGI Packseat. I found it at our nearby REI, wouldn’t you know, where its nice look and higher seat quickly caught my eye. Top that off with a cover that’s attached, 3.5×15 inches folded down (thanks to shock corded legs), and support for 300 pounds, and I was sold. It costs $24.95, which isn’t bad considering your cheapest ones are around $16.

So it works for around the campfire. But like any of these lightweight 3-legged stools, it requires a little balance effort to keep from toppling off of it. Don’t sit with your back downhill (Son), or try to scoot it without actually standing up (Son) and everything should be just fine.

I really like the carrying bag and hook to attach it to your pack, too.
